Dry baby, happy baby!

How pleasant it feels to wake up with a happy smiling baby? Ask me!

My mother, though she tries hard to cope up with the changing generation and life style of people, she still has her own norms when it comes to taking care of your baby.

The day my LO was born, the hospital people tugged a new born baby diaper of some xyz brand on my baby’s bum. I still remember the horrified expression on my mom’s face after seeing the diaper. ” They put diaper to such a tiny baby! He will get rashes…how will he sleep…his legs won’t grow normally and later it causes problems when he wants to walk. Diaper is a strict no! I am going to remove it” she said this and the moment the nurse went out she removed my baby’s diaper and tied a piece of cloth (which she had stitched in a diaper style with strings to tie a knot and safeguard it). While I do believe that everything that is ‘modern’ may not be ‘good’, and some old methods which our mommies follow when it concerns to our babies really work well, wearing a diaper instead of cloth was something I really wanted to follow.

My definition of a happy baby is when he is tummy full, sleeped sufficient and DRY…! The cloth thing would not give me this. That day my mother had to change nearly 15-20 cloths as my baby would soil them every 15 -20 mins. More than her I was tired seeing her efforts. I suggested we should put on diaper, but then she bombarded me with a big lecture on how cruel I would be towards my baby by doing this. I gave up!

We coped up with this for a month. I had sleepless nights. My life was stuck in the cloth diapers!  All I remember about the first month of my motherhood is changing those cloth diapers every 15 min, after a heap of diapers soiled…soak them in dettol water, put them in the machine to wash, unfortunately if they won’t come out dry then tug them on the cloth stand one by one.

After my LO was a month old, one of my close friend came over to see my baby. She gifted me a pack of baby nessecities which had Pampers brand diapers in it. I thought I should use them. Without my mom’s knowledge I once put on Pampers diaper to my baby at night. My LO woke up only twice at night because he was hungry and NOT because of a soiled diaper. I had the most peaceful sleep of my life that night! The next morning when my mom woke up, she was extremely happy seeing my LO playing merrily. And when I told her the diaper story, she was happy and accepted the fact that this change is for good!

Babies are extremely delicate. They are born with the need to be loved. They can only express their pain and discomfort by crying. It is a mother’s duty to understand what is best for her baby and provide him with the same. Breaking the old fashioned conservative norm of cloth diaper and switching to pampers diapers was a good decision indeed. The best part is these pampers baby dry pants keep your baby’s skin dry and healthy for upto 12 hours. Alas I got my much needed sleep and a dry baby, is always a happy baby!!
